Albany Medical Center

Caring for Children works with the staff at the Albany Medical Center Sickle Cell Program to help children and their families. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person’s parents. The most common type is known as sickle cell anemia (SCA). It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein hemoglobin found in red blood cells. This leads to a rigid, sickle-like shape under certain circumstances. Problems in sickle cell disease typically begin around 5 to 6 months of age. Albany Med incorporates the 766-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, and Albany Medical College, and which also includes a biomedical research enterprise and a physician practice with 500 doctors.

Baystate Health

Caring for Children works with the Baystate Pediatric Palliative Care Program at Baystate Children’s Hospital to identify and help children with various illnesses (cancer and blood disorders, cystic fibrosis, HIV/AIDS, progressive genetic, neurologic, and metabolic disorders, and severe cerebral palsy). The children’s hospital is part of Baystate Health is a not-for-profit, integrated healthcare system serving over 800,000 people throughout western New England. With roots dating to the founding of Springfield Hospital in 1883, Baystate Health has been providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare in the Pioneer Valley for more than 140 years. In addition to the hospital, Baystate also includes Baystate Medical Center, three community hospitals and a network of more than 80 medical practices.

Berkshire Health System

Caring for Children works with the Berkshire Pediatric Palliative Care Program helping children with advanced cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, major organ failure, HIV, cystic fibrosis, congenital or genetic conditions, neurological disorders, renal failure, or traumatic injury. The program is located at Hospice Care in the Berkshire in Pittsfield, MA which is part of the Berkshire Health Systems. Berkshire Health is northwestern Massachusetts leading provider of comprehensive healthcare services. BHS serves the region through a network of affiliates which include Berkshire Medical Center, the BMC Hillcrest Campus, Fairview Hospital, Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association, BHS physician practices, and long-term care associate Berkshire Healthcare Systems.

Boston Children's Hospital Tagline

Caring for Children works with the team a Boston Children’s Hospital AIDS Program (CHAP), to help children diagnosed with AIDS. CHAPs offer comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents with, or at risk for, HIV infection or AIDS. Their services include counseling, testing, diagnosis, treatment, education, mental health services, case management, and referrals. Research pioneered by their team and others, as well as the success of anti-viral drugs, has transformed the disease from a death sentence to a manageable condition. Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA is ranked the number one pediatric hospital in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. It is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School and treats more children with rare diseases and complex conditions than any other hospital in the country.

Boston Medical Center

Caring for Children works with the Hematology Program Team at Boston Medical Center to help children with blood disorders and their families. These disorders include hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell anemia and thalassemia), hemochromatosis, bleeding and thrombotic disorders (von Willebrand’s disease and hemophilia), hypercoagulable states, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplasia and anemia, and malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, not-for-profit, 514-bed, academic medical center located in Boston’s historic South End. The primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine, BMC is the largest safety-net hospital and busiest trauma and emergency services center in New England. More than half of our patients come from underserved populations, such as the low-income and elderly, who rely on government payers such as Medicaid, the Health Safety Net, and Medicare for their coverage; 32 percent do not speak English as a primary language.

Caring for Children works with the team at Fragile Footprints, which is part of Cranberry Hospice/Beth Israel Deaconess Plymouth and the pediatric care network of Massachusetts. It is focused on enhancing the quality of life for the child who is suffering a life-threatening condition, progressive disease, progressive condition or an irreversible but non-progressive condition, and his or her family by minimizing suffering, optimizing function and providing opportunities for personal and spiritual growth.

Good Shepard Community Care

Caring for Children works with Palliative Care Program team at Good Shepherd Community Care to help children with debilitating life-threatening illnesses. Palliative care is a holistic, patient- and family-centered approach for those facing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges of life-limiting conditions. It is appropriate at every stage of the disease process and can serve patients and their loved ones whether seeking aggressive treatment or not. Palliative care services enhance comfort and quality of life by managing symptoms and increasing patient choice and access to information. Good Shepherd Community Care is one of the most trusted health care organizations in Greater Boston focusing on hospice and palliative care. Founded as Hospice of the Good Shepherd in 1978, we are the original Massachusetts hospice. After decades of caring for our community, we continue to remain community-based, not-for-profit and non-sectarian.

Notre Dame Healthcare

Caring for Children works with the team at the Notre Dame Pedi Pals Program, helping children in the and families in the Central Massachusetts area. The Pedi Pals is a provider for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Pediatric Palliative Care Network. Notre Dame Pedi Pals is funded by DPH and is available to all children and families in Massachusetts. Pedi Pals enhances existing services to meet the needs of eligible children with any life-limiting illness, even when a cure remains a possibility. Dealing with the diagnosis of a child’s serious illness is difficult for the entire family. For the past 100 years, Notre Dame Healthcare has remained a place of renewal, refreshment and healthy living.

Project Promise

Caring for Children works with the team at Project Promise, helping children and their families in the Boston area. The Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR), in collaboration with Boston Medical Center’s SPARK Center and Project RESPECT, designed Project Promise, a day treatment program serving pregnant and parenting women and their children, located at the SPARK Center, a model childcare program offering services for children and families whose lives are affected by medical, emotional and/or behavioral challenges.
